PAPERTOWN

A feature-length documentary film exploring the evolving landscape of small-town life in Appalachia. When a paper mill in a small Appalachian town suddenly closes, leaving 1,200 people without jobs and undoing the economic fabric that held the town together for over a century, how will its people navigate the impending transformation of their way of life and identity as a community?

In Production

Papertown has been in production since the announcement of the mill closure in March 2023. This film chronicles the community’s journey as they grapple with the loss of the 115-year-old mill, the town’s cornerstone, and highlights how its residents forge new paths to rebuild their lives. Papertown delves into themes of loss, identity, the decline of American industry, political depolarization, and the resilient spirit of the Appalachian people.

As of August 2024, filming is nearly complete, and post-production is underway with a targeted festival release in 2025. We have received generous grants from the Ford Foundation, Catapult Film Fund, and Foundation for the Carolinas.
